Top 5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Concrete Driveway

October 1, 2025 By algairen

Your driveway is one of the first things people notice about your home — and one of the hardest-working surfaces on your property. Over time, even the best concrete starts to show its age.
So how do you know when it’s time for a full concrete driveway replacement instead of another patch or repair?

At McGhee’s Concrete, we’ve helped Virginia homeowners repair, resurface, and replace driveways for years. Here are the top five signs your driveway may need a fresh start.

1. Deep or Widespread Cracks

A few hairline cracks are normal, but if you’re seeing large or expanding cracks that form patterns across your driveway, that’s a clear warning sign.
Deep cracks allow water to seep beneath the surface, leading to erosion and frost damage — especially during winter months.

Once cracking spreads across large areas, repairs won’t hold for long. Replacing the concrete is often the best long-term solution.

2. Uneven or Sunken Areas

Does your driveway look like it’s starting to sink or slope?
This can happen when the ground underneath settles or washes away, leaving hollow spots that cause the concrete to dip.

Uneven concrete isn’t just unattractive — it’s a tripping hazard and can cause drainage issues that lead to more damage.
A new driveway will restore both the look and safety of your property.

3. Drainage Problems

If you’ve noticed standing water or pooling after rain, it’s time to take a closer look.
Poor drainage causes moisture to collect beneath your driveway, leading to cracks, crumbling, and even foundation damage nearby.

When the slope or grading of the driveway fails, replacing it allows us to re-level and reinforce the base for proper water runoff — protecting your home and landscaping in the process.

4. Potholes or Crumbling Edges

Potholes are more than just an eyesore — they’re a sign your concrete’s foundation is breaking down.
Once sections start to crumble or the edges begin to deteriorate, patching won’t restore the structural integrity.

A new concrete pour ensures a solid, uniform surface that can handle daily wear and tear for decades to come.

5. It’s Over 20 Years Old

Even the most durable concrete driveways eventually wear out.
If yours is 20 years old or more, it may be nearing the end of its lifespan — especially if it’s been exposed to harsh weather, heavy vehicles, or poor drainage.

Replacing it now not only enhances curb appeal but can also increase your property value and save money on constant repairs.

How to Maintain Your Concrete Surfaces for Longevity

September 1, 2025 By algairen

Concrete is one of the most durable and versatile materials for driveways, patios, and walkways. However, even the strongest concrete can show wear over time if it isn’t properly maintained. With a few simple steps, you can extend the life of your concrete surfaces and keep them looking great for years to come.

1. Clean Regularly

Dirt, debris, and stains can gradually erode concrete surfaces. Regular sweeping and occasional washing with a mild detergent and water prevent buildup that can damage the finish. For tougher stains, consider a gentle pressure wash, but avoid using high pressure that could chip or crack the concrete.

2. Seal Your Concrete

Applying a high-quality concrete sealer protects surfaces from moisture, salt, and other damaging elements. Sealing should be done every 2–3 years, depending on exposure to weather and traffic. A good sealer not only preserves the structural integrity of your concrete but also enhances its appearance.

3. Address Cracks Promptly

Even small cracks can expand over time due to freeze-thaw cycles and heavy use. Filling cracks early prevents water infiltration and further damage. McGhee’s Concrete recommends inspecting your surfaces regularly and using appropriate concrete repair products for minor cracks.

4. Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Deicing salts and strong chemicals can corrode concrete and reduce its lifespan. Use sand or kitty litter for traction in icy conditions, and rinse off any accidental chemical spills quickly to protect the surface.

5. Protect Against Heavy Loads

Concrete is strong, but excessive weight or sharp objects can cause damage. Avoid parking heavy trucks or dropping equipment on patios and walkways. For driveways, consider designating specific areas for heavier vehicles.

6. Plan for Seasonal Maintenance

Seasonal changes, especially in Virginia’s climate, can affect concrete longevity. Keep surfaces clear of standing water, remove leaves and debris in fall, and inspect after winter for cracks or scaling. Proactive maintenance helps prevent costly repairs down the road.

Keep Your Concrete Looking and Performing Its Best

With routine cleaning, sealing, and careful attention to potential damage, your concrete driveways, patios, and walkways can remain strong and attractive for decades.

At McGhee’s Concrete, we provide expert advice and professional maintenance services to help you extend the life of your concrete surfaces. Whether you need sealing, repairs, or guidance on proper care, our team is here to help.

Why Commercial Concrete Is the Right Choice for Your Next Project

August 1, 2025 By algairen

When you’re planning a commercial project in Virginia, one of the most important decisions is choosing the right material. For many reasons, concrete remains the top choice. At McGhee’s Concrete, we’ve seen how the right concrete work brings lasting value to businesses.

Strength That Lasts

Commercial spaces need materials that hold up under pressure. Whether you’re building a warehouse floor, a loading dock, or a parking lot, concrete offers unmatched strength. Unlike other materials, it can handle constant use, heavy machinery, and changing weather. As a result, it remains strong for years.

Lower Maintenance Means Bigger Savings

Concrete is not only tough—it’s also low maintenance. In fact, it needs fewer repairs over time than asphalt or other alternatives. Because of this, you’ll save time and money on upkeep. Over the long run, your investment continues to pay off.

Designed for Your Business

Every project is different. That’s why we tailor our concrete services to your exact needs. For example, we can install polished concrete for a modern retail space. Or, we can reinforce slabs for industrial use. Even better, we also offer decorative finishes for showrooms and office entries. Whatever you need, we’ll deliver.

5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Old Concrete Driveway

July 1, 2025 By algairen

Your driveway plays a big role in your home’s curb appeal and safety. Over time, though, even the most durable concrete will show signs of wear. While small cracks are normal, some issues signal it’s time for a full replacement.

At McGhee’s Concrete, we help homeowners spot the warning signs early and replace damaged driveways with long-lasting results. Here are five key signs your concrete driveway needs professional attention.

1. Large Cracks Keep Getting Worse

All concrete cracks eventually. However, when the cracks grow wider than a quarter inch or begin to spread, they may point to deeper problems. Shifting soil or poor drainage can cause severe cracking that repairs alone won’t fix.

In this case, replacing the entire surface helps restore both safety and structure.

2. Uneven or Sunken Areas Appear

Has your driveway started to dip or sink in certain spots? Uneven concrete isn’t just unsightly—it can also be dangerous. These spots often form when the ground beneath your driveway settles unevenly.

If leveling or patching no longer works, a new concrete installation will create a safe, smooth surface once again.

3. Water Pools Instead of Draining

After it rains, does water collect in certain areas? Standing water can weaken concrete over time, especially in colder climates where freeze-thaw cycles create more damage.

Proper grading and drainage are essential. Replacing the driveway gives you the chance to correct slope issues and prevent future water damage.

4. Frequent Repairs Aren’t Working

If you keep sealing, patching, or resurfacing—and the problems return—you’re likely wasting time and money. At a certain point, repairs stop being effective, especially when the base beneath the concrete is compromised.

A full replacement not only looks better but also holds up longer.

5. Your Driveway Is Over 20 Years Old

Most concrete driveways last 20–30 years with proper maintenance. If yours is approaching that age and showing multiple signs of wear, replacement is often the smarter investment.

Plus, a new driveway instantly boosts curb appeal and adds value to your home.

Upgrade Your Driveway with McGhee’s Concrete

We specialize in concrete driveway replacement, offering expert workmanship, honest service, and long-lasting results. Whether you’re dealing with cracks, sinking spots, or just old age—we’re ready to help.

Top Signs Your Concrete Needs Repair or Replacement

June 1, 2025 By algairen

Concrete is strong—but it’s not invincible. Over time, weather, wear, and shifting ground can cause cracks and damage. If you notice any of the signs below, it might be time to call in the experts. At McGhee’s Concrete, we help homeowners and property managers know when it’s time to act.

1. Cracks That Keep Getting Worse

Small cracks are normal. However, if they’re growing or spreading, it could signal deeper problems. Water can seep in and freeze, making the damage worse. Wide or uneven cracks often mean it’s time for repairs—or even a full replacement.

2. Uneven or Sunken Areas

If your driveway or walkway looks lopsided, it’s a sign of shifting ground underneath. Uneven surfaces aren’t just an eyesore. They can also be a serious tripping hazard. This is especially dangerous in high-traffic areas.

3. Pooling Water

Water should flow off your concrete, not sit on top of it. Pooling water means your surface may no longer be level. Over time, this can lead to erosion and cracking. In winter, water that freezes in these low spots can cause even more damage.

4. Spalling or Flaking

When the top layer of your concrete starts to flake off, that’s called spalling. This happens when water and salt work their way into the surface. As it breaks down, the concrete loses strength and starts to crumble. If the damage is widespread, repairs may not be enough.

5. Fading or Discoloration

While fading alone doesn’t always mean structural problems, it can be a warning sign. Discoloration often points to water damage or surface wear. In addition, it may show that your concrete’s protective sealant has worn away.

6. Exposed Rebar

Seeing rusted steel rods in your concrete is never good. If the rebar is exposed, the concrete has likely lost a lot of its strength. This is a serious issue that typically calls for full replacement to prevent further structural problems.

7. Frequent Repairs

Have you patched the same crack more than once? Are you constantly fixing trip hazards or drainage issues? If so, it may be more cost-effective to replace the surface entirely. New concrete can save time, money, and stress in the long run.

Don’t Wait Until It Gets Worse

Concrete problems don’t fix themselves. In fact, they usually get worse with time and weather. At McGhee’s Concrete, we offer free evaluations to help you make the right call—repair or replace. We’ll walk you through your options and provide a long-lasting solution you can trust.
