From Pour to Perfection: Our Concrete Installation Process

May 1, 2025 By mcghees

At McGhee’s Concrete, we believe that a strong, beautiful concrete surface starts with a solid process. Whether it’s a new driveway, patio, or commercial walkway, our team follows a detailed concrete installation method that ensures quality and durability every step of the way.

Here’s what you can expect when you choose us.

1. On-Site Consultation and Planning

Every project begins with a conversation. We visit your property to assess the space, understand your needs, and answer your questions.

During this phase, we:

  • Evaluate soil conditions and drainage
  • Measure the area and confirm layout
  • Discuss style options like stamped or brushed finishes
  • Provide a detailed estimate and timeline

Transparency starts here. We want you to feel confident about what’s coming next.

2. Site Preparation

Once you’re ready to move forward, we begin preparing the site. This step is crucial—it sets the foundation for everything else.

Our prep work includes:

  • Clearing the area of grass, roots, and debris
  • Excavating to the proper depth
  • Compacting the soil to prevent settling
  • Installing forms to outline the pour area
  • Adding gravel or stone base for drainage and stability

Without proper preparation, even the best concrete won’t last.

3. Reinforcement (As Needed)

Depending on the type of project, we may install steel rebar or wire mesh to reinforce the concrete. This adds strength and helps prevent cracking, especially for driveways or heavy-use areas.

We’ll explain when and why reinforcement is needed, so you’re always informed.

4. Concrete Pouring and Leveling

This is where the transformation begins.

Our crew carefully pours the concrete, ensuring even distribution and proper thickness. We use professional-grade tools to level and smooth the surface, making sure everything is precise.

Timing matters here. We work quickly and efficiently to shape and finish the concrete before it sets.

5. Finishing Touches

Once the surface is level, we apply the chosen finish—such as brushed, stamped, or exposed aggregate. This step gives your concrete its final look and feel.

We also:

  • Add expansion joints to prevent cracking
  • Edge the borders for a clean appearance
  • Apply curing compound to protect the surface

Every detail matters, and we don’t cut corners.

6. Curing and Clean-Up

Concrete takes time to cure properly. We guide you on when it’s safe to walk or drive on your new surface. During this time, we clean up the site and leave it looking even better than before we arrived.

You get a durable, long-lasting surface that’s built to withstand Virginia’s weather and daily wear.

Trust the Process. Trust McGhee’s.

When you hire McGhee’s Concrete, you’re not just hiring contractors—you’re partnering with a team that cares about craftsmanship, transparency, and your satisfaction.

Spring Concrete Maintenance: How to Protect Your Driveway and Patio

April 1, 2025 By algairen

As winter fades and the warmer weather arrives, it’s the perfect time to inspect and maintain your concrete surfaces. Cold temperatures, ice, and moisture from winter can leave your driveway and patio vulnerable to cracks, stains, and erosion. Proper spring concrete maintenance can help extend the life of your concrete and keep it looking great for years to come.

Why Spring Maintenance is Important

Concrete is known for its durability, but prolonged exposure to harsh winter conditions can weaken it over time. Therefore, spring is the ideal time to assess any damage, clean off debris, and take preventive measures to avoid costly repairs later. By following a few simple steps, you can easily protect your driveway and patio from further wear and tear.

Essential Spring Concrete Maintenance Tips

1. Inspect for Damage

First, start by thoroughly inspecting your driveway and patio for cracks, chips, or uneven areas. Small cracks can quickly grow if left untreated, allowing water to seep in and cause further deterioration.

What to Do:

  • Look for surface cracks, crumbling edges, and discoloration.
  • Check for signs of sinking or shifting due to soil movement.
  • Mark any problem areas that need repair.

2. Clean Off Dirt, Debris, and Stains

Winter weather often leaves behind salt residue, dirt, and grime, which can weaken the surface of your concrete. Cleaning your driveway and patio during spring will help restore their appearance while also preventing long-term damage.

How to Clean Your Concrete:

  • Use a pressure washer to remove dirt, salt, and mildew buildup effectively.
  • Apply a mild detergent for stubborn stains like oil or grease.
  • Scrub with a stiff brush to break up grime before rinsing thoroughly.

3. Repair Cracks and Surface Damage

Cracks and small holes may seem minor, but they can expand rapidly if moisture seeps in. Addressing these issues early is key to preventing costly repairs down the road.

How to Repair:

  • Fill small cracks with a high-quality concrete patching compound.
  • For larger cracks, consider professional resurfacing.
  • Allow repairs to cure completely before applying sealant.

4. Apply a Protective Sealant

A concrete sealer acts as a barrier against moisture, UV rays, and stains. In fact, sealing your driveway and patio in the spring helps prevent damage throughout the year.

Steps to Seal Your Concrete:

  • Choose a penetrating sealer for maximum protection.
  • Apply with a roller or sprayer, following the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
  • Allow proper drying time before using the surface.

5. Improve Drainage Around Your Concrete

Poor drainage can lead to water pooling on your driveway or patio, which can cause erosion and weaken the structure.

Drainage Fixes:

  • Clear gutters and downspouts to direct water away from concrete surfaces.
  • Add gravel or landscaping around the edges to prevent runoff damage.
  • Ensure your concrete is slightly sloped to promote water drainage.

6. Avoid Using Harsh De-Icing Chemicals

If you used de-icing salt during the winter, it may have caused surface damage. Some chemicals can break down the concrete, leading to pitting and cracks over time.

Better Alternatives:

  • Use sand or kitty litter for traction instead of salt.
  • If needed, choose a concrete-safe de-icer with calcium magnesium acetate.
  • Be sure to rinse off any remaining de-icing residue to prevent long-term damage.

Keep Your Concrete Looking Its Best Year-Round

Spring is the perfect time to refresh and protect your driveway and patio. By performing regular maintenance, you can extend the lifespan of your concrete, prevent costly repairs, and keep it looking great.

At McGhee’s Concrete, we offer professional concrete repair, sealing, and maintenance services. Whether you need to fix cracks, resurface your patio, or upgrade your driveway, our experts are here to help.

5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Concrete Patio

February 1, 2025 By algairen

A well-built concrete patio can last for decades, but over time, wear and tear become inevitable. While minor cracks and discoloration are common, some issues indicate that a full replacement is the best option. If you’ve noticed any of these signs, it might be time to upgrade your outdoor space.

1. Cracks That Keep Growing

Concrete naturally develops small cracks due to temperature changes and settling. However, if cracks continue to spread, widen, or create uneven surfaces, they may signal deeper structural issues. Large cracks allow moisture to seep in, which can weaken the foundation and cause even more damage over time.

2. Uneven or Sunken Areas

Have you noticed parts of your patio sinking or becoming uneven? This can happen due to soil erosion, poor installation, or shifting ground beneath the surface. Sunken areas create tripping hazards and may indicate that the underlying foundation is no longer stable. While minor leveling might work for small dips, widespread sinking is a clear sign that your patio needs replacement.

3. Water Pooling and Drainage Issues

Does water collect in certain areas of your patio after rain? Standing water can accelerate concrete deterioration and lead to mold or mildew growth. Poor drainage can also cause surrounding landscaping issues, damaging your lawn or nearby structures. If water isn’t draining properly, it may be time to install a new patio with a better slope and improved drainage.

4. Surface Wear and Extensive Damage

Over the years, exposure to sun, rain, and foot traffic can make your patio look worn out. If you notice deep stains, flaking, or surface pitting that won’t go away with cleaning or sealing, replacement might be the best solution. A new concrete patio can refresh your outdoor space and improve functionality.

5. Outdated or Unattractive Appearance

Does your patio still match your home’s style? If it looks outdated or no longer fits your outdoor design vision, replacing it with a modern option can add aesthetic appeal and value. Stamped or decorative concrete can mimic the look of brick, stone, or tile while providing the durability of concrete.

Upgrade Your Outdoor Space with McGhee’s Concrete

If your patio shows any of these signs, don’t wait until the damage gets worse. At McGhee’s Concrete, we specialize in high-quality patio replacements that enhance your home’s beauty and functionality. Contact us today for a free consultation and let’s create a durable, stylish outdoor space that you’ll love for years to come!
